Tampa Theatre

Tampa Theatre Stage
The Tampa Theatre is one of the few remaining movie palaces in this great nation. Built in 1926, it avoided demolition in 1973 when the citizens of Tampa rallied to save it. It prompted the city to buy, restore, and fill it with concerts, screenings, and special events. Thank goodness, too, because what a gorgeous, national treasure this movie palace has become. The theatre is now managed by the non-profit Tampa Theatre Foundation.

Twice a month, they offer a Balcony-to-Backstage tour for only $5 for adults. It lasts approximately 90 minutes, and includes a live demo of the Mighty Wurlitzer Organ. Is it worth it? Yes. It's even worth the drive from Orlando or more.

The Mighty Wurlitzer Organ Console

Our tour guide was extraordinarily knowledgeable and interesting. For those who love history, this is an absolute treat. They go into every single detail you can think of. From the creative architect, John Eberson, to the mechanics behind the famous Mighty Wurlitzer Organ. They also will treat you to fun trivia about the theatre - first screenings, famous concerts, pleasant surprises. I couldn't remember all of it, but wish I could.

The best part was being able to sit down close to the stage with only your tour group around you, and absorbing the surroundings in peace. I felt an overwhelming sense of its history when they turned the lights down to show off the magical ceiling. I might have even shed a tear. The detail of everything is breathtaking.

This theatre may not be as large as other movie palaces, especially those on the left coast such as the El Capitan or Grauman's Chinese Theatre (now TCL Chinese Theatre), but it is perfectly capable of holding its own. We watched From Here To Eternity (Burt Lancaster, Deborah Kerr) here when they did a special screening and absolutely loved the experience. But we must warn that the seats are small and there is minimal leg room. Just about the only downfall of such an old theatre.
